Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 5th grade bilingual students. We are a large urban school with over 500 students, 95% of whom are of Hispanic origin. Our students' parents have come to the United States to make a better life for their families. We are a neighborhood school in an Hispanic community. The neighborhood thrives with working families, local restaurants, shops, and service centers. It is a bustling but conservative area. The neighborhood streets are alive with remodeled homes in warm southwestern colors and textures.
On December 26, 2007, our school sustained substantial damage due to an accidental fire. Every book, pencil, piece of paper, computer, desk and chair were destroyed by the fire or suffered smoke damage to the point of being unusable.
Our class needs high interest, grade level chapter books. Gooney Bird Greene and the Wimpy Kid are wonderful books that 5th graders love to read. They have discovered that characters such as these are humorous and believable in their eyes. As they begin to identify with certain authors, they realize these characters are included in a series of books. I realized students read for a longer period of time so they can move onto the next book in the series. I have noticed that some children check online for additional books by these authors. How satisfying it is to see this.
Your generosity will provide the class with a set of books that my students want to read. They have asked for and talked among themselves about the books. It is heart-warming to see a child take a book home on Friday and return to school on Monday asking for the next book in the series. When I asked one reluctant reader about a book he had returned, he responded that it was the best book he had ever read and asked if there was another one just like it. What a reward it is to see! That's what education is all about.
