When did you first experience computers? Imagine the possibilities if you had access in Kindergarten. It could be inspirational! I strive to facilitate those inspirational moments everyday with my Kindergarten learners. I have the privilege of working with a wonderfully enthusiastic group of learners. Our school exists in a high-needs community, which is culturally diverse. Most of our young students have had no previous educational experiences. The majority of our students are non-native English speakers.

Children are captivated by visual information. As a class, we can access visual information using a computer and projector, but this makes it very difficult for students to do any group projects. In my classroom quality access to computers is limited. In Kindergarten we have access to 3 old computers. They take up lots of space, lack the ability to access the Internet resources that I want to use with my students and limit their ability to work collaboratively in groups. Basically our computers are intended to be used for playing educational games. This lack of adequate current technology is stifling my students’ academic growth.

In my classroom it is essential that I begin building a media center. The use of current computer technology will allow my students access to videos, Zoo cams and the ability to connect with other classrooms around the world. Acquiring this prevalent technology will help me to increase my students’ knowledge about the world and facilitate learning how to use it properly for lifetime learning. Working with the computers has the added benefit of assisting children in learning important social behaviors when working in a cooperative group setting.
