Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help 120 Oakland youth publish their writing. I am a 6th grade Humanities teacher in East Oakland.

Our school has cut all arts funding and residency funding this year. Our resident art and poetry teachers have been consolidated. We hold annual community Expositions of student work which we would like to continue to produce in a way students can be proud of. I am in need of assistance with materials that will help the students show off their incredible work in a professional way.

A book binding machine will allow us to publish finished products. Students gain the experience of preparing work until it is ready for show, using all the stages of the writing process as well as their best artistic skill. Then, their work can be bound and kept for years to come. We cannot pay a copier to do this work. However, if the students do it themselves, they are much more likely to take pride in what they do.

You can make it possible for students to try on the roles of author, illustrator, publisher, and presenter in a school where less and less emphasis is being placed on their creativity, capacity, and voice.
