Let’s Explore Letters A Through Z!!! "I teach Intensive Reading in a Kindergarten classroom. Most of my students begin Kindergarten with little or no knowledge of letter names and sounds. Due to high poverty, developmental delays, English as a second language, and disabilities, students come into my Intensive Reading Kindergarten class at much lower levels than their peers in regular Kindergarten. I truly believe “all” children can learn, if exposed to a number of techniques, finding their learning style. I have found several items that would greatly benefit my class. The ” Alphabet Train “ consists of wooden engine and of 26 cars (one for each letter of the alphabet) each containing a wooden object that begins with the letter/sound corresponding to a labeled car. The train will allow students to work in social groups, hooking the cars in ABC order and placing the items in their corresponding cars. Completion of the train will allow students to feel successful. The “Letter Of The Day” pocket chart will provide focused, daily practice for every letter of the alphabet, giving my delayed students the reinforcement they need to master every letter of the alphabet! There is a colorful photo of an object and large upper and lowercase letters with arrows, showing correct letter formation, along with a catchy chant for each letter, helping students identify and recognize each letter. There’s also an additional four pockets to hold four colorful picture cards of objects and their printed words, for each letter, helping students to connect language, letters, and sounds. A wonderful “Alphabet Activity Wheel” will involve the entire class in daily, fun filled, listening and following direction activities. One of 30 cards is chosen containing a question and instruction ( ex. If this letter is in your name, stand up. A spin of the wheel identifies the letter and students follow the instruction) What a great way to get students ready to be “good listeners at the start of each day." Finally, a set if wipe off cards featuring photos and words to trace, will help students connect objects to letter sounds, while practicing their letter formation. Seeing the letters will benefit visual learners, touching the objects will benefit kinesthetic learners, and hearing the sounds will benefit auditory learners. The combined techniques will expose "ALL" students to a variety of learning styles, allowing new opportunities for learning each and every day of the school year!
