Please Make My Classroom GREEN!

My students need to learn the importance of using "green" products. For this reason, I am requesting the following products: 10 cases of biodegradable sandwich bags, 20 packs of biodegradable corn cups, and 2 cases of recycled paper towels.

I am a science teacher who teaches grades kindergarten through 5th grade. I teach all 750 students from the school each week. Since I do not get funding from my school district for supplies, I rely on the school, PTA, parents, and the community for my supplies.

As I have taught science over the past four years, I have been faced with one huge problem- all of the waste that is produced as a result of the hands on experiments that we do. We typically use clear plastic cups (since glass containers are not allowed) for many of our experiments. Even though I try to wash and reuse the cups as often as possible, many cups inevitably get thrown away. Many of our experiments result in a product which is sent home. This product is sent home in a plastic sandwich bag. I assume this bag eventually finds its way to the trashcan. Lastly, as you can imagine, doing all of these hand on experiments results in lots and lots of spills. We use many paper towels in the class for clean up.

I believe that one way to solve the problem of waste in the classroom is to use products that are "green". Instead of using plastic cups which take thousands of years to biodegrade, I could use corn cups which take less than 2 years to biodegrade. In addition instead of using plastic bags that take thousands of years to biodegrade, I can use bags that will biodegrade in 12-24 months. Lastly, instead of using paper towels that are made from virgin wood pulp, I can use paper towels made from recycled paper. Not only would we use these green products, but I would educate the students on the importance of using green products so that hopefully they would take this info home to their families. In addition, I would also educate the students on the 3 R's "reduce, reuse, and recycle" whenever possible in the classroom.

The future is up to our students! It is our job to teach them the importance of sustainability and how to take care of the earth. I believe that if we teach kids at an early age the importance of using "green" products, this information will be instilled in them for the rest of their lives. Thanks for your consideration!
