Behind The Mask

My students need materials to instantly create an original mask and then create additional pieces from forms with books and a DVD to guide their creations.

From the ancient Greeks to the fantastic realm of the Kabuki to modern theatre masks have been integral as actors literally don a new character. As a theatre arts instructor in a small rural town in Georgia, I am constantly reminded how so few of my students have ventured past the surrounding area. My classes totaling 169 students (15% of the entire student body) are comprised of 9th through 12th grade students. Students vary in academics from honors to special education students. One venture that consistently proves to bring together their varied experiences is theatre.

Funding for the arts is hard to come by. Our department presents productions completely paid for by proceeds from previous productions. We are a self-supported organization, yet we produce 4 productions a year as well as a free children's theatre experience. My classes are shown masks from different cultures and styles, but do not have the necessary supplies to create a tangible product they can proudly display. After my trip to Tokyo and the Kabukiza, students began to show an even greater interest in masks from varied cultures.

The paper mache masks I have requested will allow students to instantly begin work on creating their own mask. The DVD, photos, and books will further expose the students to what masks have been and what masks can be. In addition, the mask forms will allow classes the ability to create a mask from scratch. This project has instant impact, but will also last for years to come!

I hope you'll see how this project will not only introduce the importance of masks in the history of theatre, but also encourage students to explore history as a whole more in depth. Several of my students discover that tying theatre in history helps them recall events and enjoy their academics more. Imagine creating masks from eras throughout history and linking it to social studies classes! Thank you for making it possible for students who commonly travel fewer than 100 miles in any direction throughout their lives to discover cultures around the world.
