Learning in Action: Flip Camera for a Science Classroom

My students need a flash camcorder as a quick and easy method to record experiments, presentations, and debates in science class, to be posted on a class website.

In my classroom, students create authentic products on science-based environmental topics, creating the next generation of green leaders. I teach 7th and 8th grade science at an environmentally focused K-8 Charter School in western North Carolina.

Science does not function in a vacuum. I want students to use science as a springboard for effecting change in the world, and group presentations, debates, and other kinesthetic learning products are commonplace in the classroom. The challenge is bringing these students' incredible work to their families, as well as stakeholders in the community. A numerical grade does not do justice to their work, and I need a way to connect their academic pursuits to the burgeoning digital world.

A flip camera is a simple video camera, easy to operate by students, which will allow video documentation of student products, which can then be viewed and shared by the students, their families, and the greater school community. The students will be able to view, critique, and reflect upon their academic products from home, and parents will be able to view and discuss their child's endeavors in school. Greater investment from students and families will be the direct result of this project.

Your help will allow the incredible creativity and knowledge of my students to reach beyond the classroom and into the greater world. The skills and confidence sown through this project will be invaluable to the students' success in the 21st century.
