Our community has a high poverty rate. 92% of our students receive subsidized meals. Almost half of the fifth graders of the upcoming school year scored below average in ELA.

Our district is in the midst of sweeping changes. New administrators at every level are encouraging teachers to try new and innovative ways to spark interest and increase productivity. These children need to be inspired and learn to enjoy education. They lack basic school supplies and would not be able to have their own MP3 players. They may have had little to no experience with them. There is, however, a large supply of grade level books available.

While many students have proclaimed a dislike for reading, all enjoy being read to. With this in mind, we'll employ a team effort in reading the most with the least "effort". Each student will choose a book of at least fourth grade level. They will practice reading by chapter, or if needed, page. They will then record the material on the MP3 player. At the end of each chapter, the student will discuss characters, plot and setting. The discussions will be both facts and opinions. When the book is complete it will be uploaded as a podcast for other students to enjoy. The discussions will lead to individuals sharing their opinions and debating differences. These podcasts will be accessible to all students in the district and can be added to continuously.

These students are bright, witty individuals with barrels of potential. They will not, however, be successful without outside help. They have not been afforded the general technological resources other students in more normally affluent areas. This small device used in the appropriate fashion will not only inspire one group but can be used indefinitely over many years and many children.
