Creating book talks for "Podcasts from the Owl's Niche." Meeting the fluency needs of third, fourth, and fifth grade students.

Fluency, the key to comprehension! Technology can be the key to developing fluency. It is a keen motivator for increasing student participation in academic projects.

One area students in grades third, fourth, and fifth are in need of developing is fluency which affects comprehension. One reading research source states, “Repeated and monitored oral reading improves reading fluency and overall reading achievement.” (National Institute for Literacy website, 2006. With my emphasis on providing reading intervention for struggling readers, I have learned that students are motivated by modern technology. The goal of my proposal is to supply the students I teach with two ipods that would be used with the one that has been designated for them. Since I move between classrooms to work with small groups, the ipods will be ideal for small group work. My goal is to develop a library of podcasts based on books students have read. Students will be engaged in small groups to write book talk paragraphs. Writing is a focus of the language arts curriculum in our school and helps students develop their verbal presentations more accurately. Once their paragraphs are complete students will learn how to produce and post a podcast. Once produced, the students will be able to access the podcasts using ipods. My rationale for this project is to meet fluency objective standards.

Your help will make this project a reality in using technology to motivate students to do repeated readings of podcasts, thus increasing their fluency. In addition, the use of the ipods will give students an opportunity to read along with recorded readings of book to help increase fluency. This project will also support the state standards of learning to present a brief oral report, speak clearly, use appropriate volume and pitch, and speak at an understandable rate.
