Enjoying Reading About Chemistry: An Oxymoron?

My students need 30 copies of the book "Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a Chemical Boyhood" by Oliver Sacks.

While the focus of my eleventh and twelfth grade suburban chemistry students is social networking, I want to introduce them to the joys of chemistry through reading.

Students study chemistry to pass the course and earn their credit. There is little thought given to reflecting on chemical understanding in new contexts. This is an obstacle to allowing the student to apply their learning to "real world" scenarios. Added to this, is the high cost of textbooks, so, there is not money allotted for enrichment reading.

The solution to this problem, a set of the Uncle Tungsten books, will serve as a starting point for rich discussions, recognition of alternative ways to look at chemistry and the opportunity to be carried along by the enthusiasm of the author. The culminating activity will be a chemical story competition that will allow the students to use their creativity and share their deeper chemistry understanding. This understanding will represent learning as opposed to rote memorization.

Your assistance will help my students transcend the bounds of a traditional chemistry class and make them chemistry learners.
