Hearts for the Heart

My students need polyester fill to complete heart pillows for hospital patients.

Hearts for Hearts is an outgrowth of a project we have been doing for several years, The Partners Program. This year we have been approached to expand our successful giving project to include maternity patients.

My students, in fourth grade, partner with another grade possibly first or second, and make heart shaped decorated pillows for patients who have had cardiac open heart surgery. In addition to being cheerful, these pillows are theraputic, allowing the patients to "hug" them when they need to cough. Now we are also going to supply the maternity patients who have had c-sections for the same recovery aspect. These pillows will be decorated with a "baby" theme.

All of these pillows take and amazing amount of stuffing. Since we will need to double or even triple our output we will need lots of stuffing. This project is beneficial to not only the patients but to our students as well. They use all their academic skills, math reading, etc. to complete these pillows. They use their teaching abilities to work with student younger than themselves and since we also include special needs students, they also build their acceptance of children with differences. The benefits of this program are far reaching. Parents become involved in the sewing and in the celebration we have at the end of the year when we donate the pillows to 2 local hospitals.

Your help will insure that this program will continue to grow this year. With the cost of the stuffing increasing and the amount needed to complete this project for this year, without your generosity we would have great difficulty making the project a success.
