I teach elementary students with mild mental disabilities and severe learning disabilities in a self-contained classroom. The school where I teach is a low-income school with little support from parents or the community. My class includes students from multiple grade levels and an even wider range of skill levels. Teaching these students requires much one-on-one attention to give the students what they need.

Giving students the one-on-one attention that they need means that often, the rest of the students must work independently. It has been very difficult to find activities that the students can participate in and benefit from. Because our resources are so limited, they often get bored with the same activities. Additionally, it has been very difficult to find activities that they can do independently, as the majority of my students are low to non-readers. All too often, the activities are too difficult or students are not getting valuable reinforcement from the activities. They need simple, self-checking activities that engage them and help reinforce the skills that they have been taught.

Hot Dots activities are the perfect solution to this problem! With these pens and flashcards, students can independently work and answer the problems, and the pens will tell them if they are correct or incorrect! Math cards are available that include the basic operations, as well as time, money, and other concepts. The other set that I have chosen is a phonics set that will help my students with the letter sounds and combination's that they struggle with so much. These cards and pens will provide meaningful reinforcement for the students, while allowing me to give them much needed one-on-one attention. Whether it is language arts or mathematics time, students will be able to use these self-checking flashcards, encouraging independence and providing much needed practice with basic skills.

You can help provide these students with learning experiences that they will find fun and engaging. My students will be thrilled to have such a “cool” resource at their fingertips. At the same time, they will be working on the skills that they so desperately need to develop. Your donation will help increase my students’ math and reading skills, their independence, and their self-confidence.
