Photojournalism Takes a Good Lens

My students need a zoom lens for our digital camera.

Images tell stories that inspire and provoke. I have been teaching English at a large, urban high school in Los Angeles for nine years. This is my fourth year teaching journalism and I love it! The students are really excited about the newspaper and are working hard to make it the best the school has seen in years. This is a school that has been labeled by the government as failing, where a close to 100% Latino student population struggles to overcome life's obstacles and defy society's low expectations of them.

We are building a journalism program in a school that so desperately needs it. The students need something to feel good about and that keeps them connected to each other and their community. The newspaper has been getting better and better, and the recent purchase of two digital SLR cameras, thanks to generous donations, has greatly improved the quality of our photography. Photographing sporting events is something students love to do and definitely the most popular section of the newspaper for readers. However, our cameras do not have adequate zoom lenses for that purpose. The photos of sports have no real subject, no focus. This is not the students' fault. They try to get close to the action, sometimes even going onto the field during football games, which I would not advise.

We are building a world-class journalism program with print, web, and broadcast outlets. Students are making audio slideshows for the web, blogging, creating podcasts, covering school events and games for the print newspaper and website. Every time I hear someone from the media talk about how best to prepare students for college and jobs in a very competitive industry, they always say that students need to be comfortable with writing, photography, audio, video, and blogging. We are doing all of these in my class, but we need to right tools to do the job. A zoom lens for the still cameras will make it possible to take compelling photos from a distance, which is especially useful for sporting events.

Your donation will allow students to take photos whose only limitations are their imagination and vision. They will prepare themselves for college and career by working collaboratively to produce the best high school newspaper and website in the city, continuing our forward momentum that has given the journalism program so much recognition in the last few years.
