My classroom is supposed to be a place where my special needs students are preparing for the job world, focusing on math and science based skills; however, as the world of work becomes increasingly steeped in computers and other technology, the opportunities my kids have for even the most basic introduction to these tools grow few and far between. I teach Occupational Course of Study Math and Life Skills Science, courses designed for special needs students that prepare them for a job, trade school, or community college. My kids range from grades 9 to 12, their needs ranging from mild to moderate. In addition, my school is in a high-need community, where most of my students do not have exposure to the technology at home either.

The obstacles my students face is lack of exposure to computers. My students are all required to have a computer skills plan in their 4 year education plan, however, few of them can perform basic tasks, including typing, keying a word document, using the Internet for research, or email. The only computers in my classroom is my teacher school-issued desk-top.

This upcoming school year, I want to focus on boosting my students' computer skill level. I want to introduce them to up-to-date technology and start teaching them those crucial skills so they can be successful in college or the job force, which ever they choose. I have a two pronged plan for doing this: the first part is focusing on my students' individual education goals. Using my planning period, I will be working on my students' education goals in a one-on-one setting. 100% of my students have computer-related goals. The other portion of my plan is classroom-wide, where my students can use the laptop for research, word processing, and other uses as well as on a larger scale for PowerPoint's and presentations. My classes are small, usually less than 15 students, so just one laptop will make a huge difference.

Your can help make it possible for my students to take their computer knowledge to the next level. Between focusing individually and classroom-wide, my students will be receiving much-needed computer instruction. While so many of my students receive excellent grades and work so hard at their classroom tasks, they are ultimately short-changed by the lack of technology in their lives. With a laptop, not only will they be able to learn the skills they need hands on, they will have a place to apply those skills.
