Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our class is a group of 24 AP Spanish Literature students, all prepared to read the cannonical works of authors such as Garcia Marquez, Borges, Garcia Lorca, Unamuno, Sor Juana de la Cruz, Tirso de Molina, and Cervantes. The course prepares students for college level literary analysis and essay writing and enhances our students' bilinguilism. We are creative writers too! Last year five of our school's student works were chosen for publication by a University Press.

The typical student is 17 - 19 years old and works twenty to forty hours per week after school to help support his or her family. Often the only "downtime" or alone time a student has is while riding the bus or train to and from work and school.

It is my hope that we can provide portable, lightweight, "train and bus friendly" books so that these teenagers may enrich their commuting time and keep the tradition of book reading in public spaces alive. I have requested 9 copies of the anthology Abriendo Puertas Tomo 1, a collection of short stories and poems by the aforementioned authors, as well as 12 individual didactic copies of Unamuno's San Manuel Bueno, Martir to help us complete our classroom set.

Contribution toward this project would help students to know and love the written masterpieces of Latino culture. Our class time will be devoted to dramatic performance, literary analysis, the building of a cultivated Spanish vocabulary, and the continued student publication of original works that these literary giants have helped inspire.
