Kids Behaving Badly~ Not in my Classroom!

My students need 21 picture books, including "We the Kids: The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States" and "Emperor's New Clothes".

I teach in a Title One school where 60% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This is my fourth year as a 3rd grade teacher and I love my job! Unfortunately, we know society in general is not the way it used to be as few, as twenty years ago. I try to teach my students everything they need to know in the core subjects, but that is not my main focus. I teach my students, while leading by example, to be the best person they possibly can be. As a teacher with cerebral palsy, I'm very proud of all I've accomplished in life. I show my students that anything is possible, but we have to learn to be the best people and citizens we possibly can be, showing compassion, fairness, integrity, respect, honesty, perseverance, and exercising self-discipline opens doors of opportunities and shows others that we care enough about ourselves to be taken seriously.

My students are wonderful little sponges! I am requesting picture books I can read aloud to reinforce the concepts of character mentioned above: compassion, fairness, integrity, respect, honesty, perseverance, and self-discipline. Some of my students come from single parent, or low income homes where parents are struggling to put food on the table and just get by each day. As important as being a good citizen is and showing well developed character traits will open doors in life, sometimes these skills may be overlooked in families struggling with day to day life.

Help me bring these 21 picture books into my classroom. They will allow me to share these qualities with my students. We will spend 4 weeks covering each main concept. The characters in the books I've chosen make these traits come to life in the lessons they learn within their books. I will incorporate the lessons of these books into weekly hands-on activities to build excitement about reading, incorporating other skills, and teaching character in a way that students learn how to apply those skills in their own lives! We will have a character trait lesson for EVERY week of the school year!

I love my job! Third graders are full of excitement and an eagerness to learn. Help me fulfill their thirst for knowledge! With these books, I can not only teach them to read, write responses, and apply academic skills to what they read, but help develop strong character traits! One of my favorite quotes is, "A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove - but the world may be a different place because I was important in the life of a child." I want my students to learn facts from me, but my top priority is to give every child in my room the tools to go out in the world and be the best person they possibly can be! Will you please help me?
