Top Ten Reasons We Need White Boards!

My students need 25 individual dry erase boards, a large dry erase easel, and a magnetic sentence board to practice important writing, spelling, and mathematical concepts.

I teach kindergarten at a Title 1 School in a low income area in Alaska where one hundred percent of the student body receives free breakfast and lunch at school. The majority of the students speak a different language at home and many are struggling to learn English at school.

My students are experiencing school for the first time. I have found that even my most energetic students adore using white boards to practice anything. Unfortunately, we do not have enough white boards in our classroom so many students have to share. Our white boards are chipped, stained, and too small for students to write on too much without erasing. The white boards that we are requesting are much better quality, and each student will be able to have his or her own. I have found that white boards engage even the students who struggle to follow along because of language barriers. In our school the majority of students speak two languages, so you can see how valuable this tool would be to us. Also, white boards can be using for several different school subjects such as writing, reading, mathematics, spelling, and science. The large white board easel will be used for modeling, reading stories, pocket chart activities, games, phonics, class writing, and much more.

Here are the top ten reasons why my students need white boards: 1. Students will learn through doing versus only watching the teacher which may be the best learning experience of all. 2. White boards provide a fun and exciting learning experience. 3. We would use the dry erase boards to practice writing letters, and for many of my students it will be their first time writing. 4. Dry erase boards are great for students to draw and solve simple mathematical story problems. 5. The dry erase markers are large which are perfect for easing young students into using pencils. 6. It provides a fun opportunity for students to practice writing numbers. 7. White boards are very useful for teaching students in small teacher led groups. 8. The teacher is able to see students' work on their individual boards which allows her to evaluate the students' progress. 9. They provide valuable practice for spelling words. 10. Our class will save paper by using white boards to practice writing.

These materials will also be used for the future kindergarten students, creating hundreds more exciting learning opportunities in the years to come.
