Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The California budget crisis hurts learning. Please help my students to explore this great country as they experience entering a video competition entitled "What is our Nation's Greatest Strength?" through the C-SPAN Student Cam competition. My senior AP Government students come from poor backgrounds and find it hard to compete for scholarships because they lack the resources. Two video cameras would allow my students, most of whom are socio-economically disadvantaged, to enter the C-SPAN competition and compete with the prep schools back east in this fantastic opportunity to learn about our nation's strengths.

Real world and real issues are what kids are interested in. Government isn't dull and boring and neither is our history. Kids learn best by doing and through exploring topics. Creating video and entering a competition will create real and meaningful learning for our classes.

With two Flip Video Camcorders, my students will create a video project and enter a national competition. Winners of the C-SPAN Student Cam Competition have even been congratulated personally by the President! We will learn about government and our nation's history through this project and connect the competition to college admissions essays and job interviews by demonstrating not only our nation's strengths, but our own personal strengths.

With your help my students can learn government in a real world setting, reflect on our nation's greatest strengths, and learn how to create a meaningful project that they will never forget.
