Portraits of the Artists as .... Kindergarteners!!!

My kindergartners need 8 art supplies such as drawing paper, watercolors, watercolor paper, people-colored crayons, picture frames, and a "make-a-face" set to work on self-portraits and other self-expression projects.

Kindergarten is often a child's first school experience especially in the urban neighborhood I work at. Most of my children come from low-income homes where their families survive at or below the poverty line and cannot afford basic school supplies. I spend time and money purchasing things like pencils, folders, regular crayons, scissors, and markers to ensure that the children have everything they need in the classroom. Unfortunately, that leaves very little of my own money to pay for the more exciting, special stuff that I need to help make kindergarten an amazing experience.

For example, in my class, we work on creating self-portraits at different times of the year. Kindergarten is a great time to explore how we are similar and different from one another and this theme comes up often in our discussions and art projects. I also link literacy, science, and social studies with art. The trouble is, we are short on art supplies, especially "people colored crayons." These crayons are amazing because they depict the different colors human beings come in. It is powerful for children to be able to think about the special shade their skin is and find that they can actually choose a color that is similar rather than only being able to choose brown, yellow, or white.

We need more people colored crayons, and we need glue sticks, drawing paper, watercolors, and watercolor paper for children to create self-portraits throughout the year and complete other art projects. We need "make-a-face" cut out faces in different skin colors for a special life-size self-portrait students will do later in the school year. Finally, we need frames to display some of the students' lovely work in.

Your help purchasing these supplies will make a genuine difference in the lives of my kindergarten students. I would love to send you their portraits and their artwork so you can see how amazing it is for children to have quality supplies and fun projects to express themselves. They are young artists and having these opportunities in kindergarten can set a strong foundation for self-expression and self-actualization. Thank you!!
