What's the Scoop?

My students need a Mac Mini to write, edit, and produce audio and video podcasts for "What's the Scoop?".

  • $826 goal

This project expired on December 2, 2009.

I teach 4th grade Reading/Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Although over half of our students at my elementary school are considered "at-risk" because of their socio-economic level, our students perform well on standardized tests. It is my goal to pool all resources available to continue in eliminating any discrepancies that exists between high need students and students from higher economic backgrounds.

If you think about your favorite teacher you probably remember how smart they were (they seemed to know everything), the enthusiasm and excitement they brought to each lesson, and how you knew that you were their favorite student. With all the educational resources available today we can help children to continue having these novel school experiences. Children still need inspiration. They need to know that what they think counts and should be heard. A major obstacle that my students face is they don’t know anybody who writes for a living. They don’t know any scientist, journalist, or anthropologists. I believe that podcasting will give each of my students a voice. There has never been so much opportunity to learn as much as can be learned through Internet resources and to broadcast what you learn. With the Mac Mini equipped with Garage Band and iMovie software, all my students' imaginations will come to life. They will write, edit, and produce regularly published podcasts. These podcasts will display their poems, book reviews, and reflections. There will also be a segment of the podcasts where students will report on current Science News and "This Day in History" Social Studies related events.

"What's the SCOOP?" stands for Students Covering events, Opening the story, Operating the equipment, and Producing results. To jumpstart the program we need the Mac Mini. It is easy to attach to the IBM keyboards and monitors we already have at our school. Effectiveness and ease of use help ensure that this program will be implemented quickly and consistently. To execute this, students will write drafts to writing prompts they choose or write with a special purpose. Then they will offer their drafts for review to another student who will use a checklist to provide quality feedback to the writer. Next the student’s work will be reviewed by an adult. Students will revise, edit the piece, and present their work during a podcast program. The Mac Mini will allow them to choose to make a video recording to show artifacts they found or made, or to conduct an interview during the podcasts. Providing choices helps ensure that no one is left behind. There is no better way to ensure that learning is solidified than to allow students to share what they have learned. This project will immerse the students in each step of producing the podcast/ video recording continuously throughout this year and many to come.

You will make it possible for my students, no matter what their background, to know they are a needed contributor to my classroom and to society. My students are at the age where they are trying to figure out what they are good at and not so good at. Your donation will ensure that they know that they are great thinkers, poem writers, story writers, technical thinkers, play writers, speakers, and listeners. You are also helping to close the achievement gap. One difference between students of high and low socio-economic levels is exposure. You will be funding a program that allows all students to participate as journalist, writers, scientist, teachers, lobbyists, and more. The truth is our favorite teacher did not know everything and did not know how capable each of their students was. They just taught us where to find out what we didn't know and that we count in this world.
