Let's Bring History To Life

My students need 30 copies of two books- "Witch of Blackbird Pond" and "Sacrifice".

I teach in a military school often considered a last chance school for students who do not succeed in the regular public school setting. My students are 6th and 7th graders. I try to combine literature with subjects such as social studies so that students maintain interest. Our school is a charter school so we lack regular school funding.

Students in our school are usually not reading textbook levels and have a difficult time understanding them. Our school doesn't have a library budget so we are constantly searching for resources to back the textbooks students use, which are often dry in content and old.

The two novels I have selected, "Witch Of Blackbird Pond," and "The Sacrifice," are both about the same historical events, same names from history, but two different points of view. Students will read the novels, compare them, discuss them, and write about them to link both reading and history.

Students enjoy history and understand it better when it comes in novel form instead of chopped up like textbooks tend to do, giving only the writers point of view. I hope to open discussion and debate using historical novels in my classroom.
