Navy 1st Graders Want To Go On A Magic Reading Carpet Ride

My first grade students need a bright and comfortable rug to welcome them into our reading corner.

First grade is a critical year to instill a love of reading in a child! My six year-old students are in need of a bright and inviting rug to place in our reading corner. I teach in a California public school right in the middle of military housing. Most of my students are from Navy families or other branches of the service who are dedicated to our country. Our small district has been severely impacted by state budget cuts.

Every day it is a challenge and an honor to help my first graders begin to read. One of the most important things I hope to give them is a love for reading. One way to do this is to create a cozy, quiet space for students to discover books and sit down to read on their own. It can be hard to concentrate and "feel the love" for reading when you are sitting on hard flooring!

By providing a cheerful and bright carpet, my students can have a comfortable and inviting spot to curl up with a good book. The reading corner will become an inviting spot where they will want to be. The more time they spend in the reading corner, the more books they will read. That, in turn, will make them better readers, and along the way most will pick up a love for books they may not have had before.

You can help make it possible to turn a boring, regular classroom corner into the reading corner where everyone wants to be! Your help will assist me to give these students a great gift, not only a cheery and colorful carpet, but an inviting space where they will have the opportunity to become lifelong lovers of reading!
