My students are extremely diverse in the fact that they come to my classroom from many different parts of the US and countries. Language is a huge barrier with some parents because the make up of our school is unique. A huge portion of parents in my school speak two languages at home. This meaning one parent speaks Spanish and the other english. They are not bilingual. I teach 4th grade and currently we are facing budget cuts as well as the rest of the county. Simple supplies such as crayons, markers, glue will be scarce next school year. Fourth grade is a difficult year because of our writing exam in February. This exam requires us to somewhat perfect a 9 year Old's grammar, spelling, and sentence structure along with teaching the rest of our standards in a very short period of time with a landslide of interruptions.

I learned the strategy of Spell It Folders last week at a reading training in my district. Since our school theme next year is GOING GREEN, I have decided not to assign loads of paper like homework. With the file folders, we can laminate and reuse all year long.

The file folders will be created and then laminated if budget permits. We cut the top flap into 4 parts. We write check, look, and see on the first flap. The second through fourth flap will read Write, Check. The students then slip in their copy paper with their spelling list on the first flap. Then as they practice their words, they continue to lift up each flap. At first, I did not buy into it, until I tried it. The word "fuchsia" was our control word. I did not know how to spell it. I tried this strategy and I finally got the word correct on the fourth try. It is an excellent idea.

Your assistance with this will make a difference in all of our students lives. Spelling is crucial to a fourth grader, when their standardized score depends on it. I am a product of a growing society of "Texting" and I do see this as a problem even for myself. Spelling is way to important to put on the backburner. Thank you for your time.
