Ohh how my garden has grown. For the past 2 years, I have been teaching at a low-income, inner city school in Louisiana. I started as the 6th grade homeroom teacher & this past year, moved to 7th grade with my students. For the 2009-2010 school year, I will be the 8th grade homeroom...Needless to say, I have truly bonded with my students after being their homeroom teacher for 3 consecutive years. When I first began teaching, the never read and basically ran wild. Over the past 2 years, they have become avid participants in the Accelerated Reader program (I compete against the class) They have developed a true love of reading & learning...and their grades have significantly improved as a result. I feel we, me and the students, have learned a great deal from each other! My garden of students is in need of books & supplies in order bloom!

My students come from extremely low-income, inner-city atmospheres. In spite of their surroundings, they have learned about the importance of respect(for themselves & others) and education. Due to budget cuts and lack of parent involvement, funds are nearly impossible to obtain from our district. This past year, my class developed a passion for reading - something I am so proud of! This passion inspired them to read through the entire classroom library. My class desperately needs book for this coming school year in order for them to continue this passion & pass their mandatory state exam.

I am asking for donations in order to purchase various teen literature (especially certain authors that my students have grown to love!) In addition, my students often comes to school unprepared (this is not their choice). I am asking for donations to purchase pencils, classroom sharpeners, as well as a few hall passes and classroom decorations.

Your help, however big or small, will help my students grow & bloom during this critical school year. Anything you give will inspire these students to continue on & continue their dreams...hopefully, one day, "paying it forward" themselves.
