Shelby, MS Grades 9-12

I teach Mississippi Studies and World Geography to freshmen, United States History to juniors, and Psychology and Sociology to seniors. Our school is in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, a historically segregated part of the country. Even though Brown v. Board of Education was passed in 1954, our school was not integrated until 1970. Most students live in poverty with someone other than a mother and a father. I do not use that as an excuse, but it does show how behind our students are when they come to us.

I teach history. Most students find history to be boring because it is about old people, who are probably dead, and events that mean nothing to them. It is not hard to teach facts, but it is hard to make facts relevant. I can draw the correlations, but the students cannot make the connections until they can vividly see the events going on through pictures, films, audio clips, letters, poems, paintings, and other primary sources. I need to bring history alive for my students to better understand the historical significance of events.

How does a teacher bring history alive? Dress up in costumes. Tried it. Watch Saving Private Ryan on one of three TVs checked out from the library. Done it. Break up into groups and read primary sources from a source book. Serves its purpose for that one lesson. My students need me at my best. I need to be at my best. In order to accomplish these facts, our classroom needs an LCD projector. With this technology (that they used to have in the middle school due to a state grant a number of years ago), our students can see history in an entirely new light. We can watch "Know Your Enemy: Japan" by the federal government from 1942. We can hear Franklin D. Roosevelt tell the nation about Pearl Harbor and our declaration of war. We can see maps of the Vietnam War side-by-side to notice the differences of troop movement. We can read William Jennings Bryan's Cross of Gold speech. We can see pictures from World War I, the Great Depression, and 9/11. Suddenly history is no longer abstract for our students, but relevant and comprehensible.

Donors out there, you can make a difference for students who feel that they have been forgotten by society. You can make history a current theme instead of a forgotten idea. All of the history lover donors, please help me foster a love of history in my students that will last a lifetime. One never knows when the next James MacPherson, David McCullough, or Doris Kearns Goodwin is waiting for the spark to be lit by a history teacher. Please help me be that history teacher and show my students that history is today, tomorrow, and yesterday. History is all around us and you could be the one that keeps it in the hearts of my students forever.
