I teach 8th grade Resource for students with learning disabilities who come from diverse backgrounds and are economically challenged. They need to read at their level (the book requested is a 5th grade reading level) and still get the benefit of a historical novel written about the period they are studying in history. This is about brothers fighting in the Revolutionary War.

Our program faces financial hardship due to budget cuts our state and school district faces. Eighty percent of my students are on free and reduced lunch and are unable to help purchase curriculum supplies for the classroom.

We need a class set of readers that are not so difficult to read that the students become frustrated. I supplement our literature program with slightly easier reading-level books that allow my students to have the experience of reading literature that is at a challenging but accessible level with strategies that improve their reading comprehension skills and vocabulary. This book offers these opportunities.

Obtaining a class set of the book "My Brother Sam is Dead" will give my students a great opportunity to explore their history standards in the context of a historically accurate fiction book about boys about the same ages as the students in my classroom. This will not just help them read but tie their experiences into history for more understanding of the birth of our nation.
