Project Kokua: Helping ALL Students Achieve

My students need fraction tiles for kinesthetic learners, graphing boards for visual learners, and a baseball math set for all the students who just want to have fun!

When I first shared with others where my first teaching assignment was, I received raised eyebrows and horror stories. The area where I teach has been written off by many as the irreparable area of Hawai`i. Every student I have met has continued to dispel this myth; illuminating the hope that this community possesses with their immense potential. The students I teach radiate hope with their multifaceted talents, they just need people to believe in and support their chance at success.

I teach in a Special Education inclusion classroom where my students come with a multitude of learning needs. My students have shown growth when I am able to meet their needs using equally diverse instructional techniques. However, my students often struggle to understand mathematical concepts without materials essential for different learning modalities. Many of my students are unable to understand grade level content without visual and kinesthetic manipulatives.

My students need a variety of learning materials that will enable them to employ a variety of learning modalities while exploring mathematical concepts. I will use these supplies to work with small groups of students on targeted learning objectives. With the right materials, each of my students can access mathematical understanding and ultimately achieve academic success.

Your kokua will help our state remember that these students are teeming with potential, that anything is possible when we believe in our children. Your kokua will help us to overcome educational inequity and give every child the opportunity to attain an excellent education.
