I teach 7th grade Civics and World Geography. I have about 130 students each year, approximately 25 Special Education and 5 ESL. We are a very diverse school with many low income students.

We live in a community that expresses its need to get involved with the school but many people do not know how. My students LOVE hands-on projects! I want to expose them to as many experiences as possible, even with budget cuts this year.

I would like for my students to conduct an oral history project from members of our community. One of my students made the comment, "I love Memorial Day, there are great sales!" Whereas that might be true, I want my students to understand that Memorial Day is about veterans. We have many veterans in our city. I would love for my students to interview these people and complete a project honoring their service. My students also correspond with pen pals from several different countries. I think it would be great if they could exchange their projects on veterans with their pen pals. Having digital recorders to record their interviews. Then they will be able to upload these to the classroom computers and create either a podcast or a movie.

An oral history project will not only instill civic pride in my students, but also provide them with professional training that they will need later in life. It would also bring together the community and provide recognition for these often forgotten veterans. Please help preserve these stories before they are lost!
