I teach Spanish at a large urban high school. I also coach volleyball and bowling. I think it is the greatest place on Earth. It is a school full of bright, young inquisitive minds who often do not have basic school supplies. My students love learning and need to be properly equipped. Sometimes they don't have their school supplies because of poor choices they have made. Sometimes their families just can't get them. Regardless of why, the lack of basic supplies impedes learning. School can be quite a struggle for my students. Yet they continue to work very hard. Many of them will be first generation high school graduates. Most of them will be first generation college students. Succeeding in college require students to have a good educational foundation. In a school were students struggle to even have the proper school supplies, college often seems out of the question. We must alleviate some of the stress the students suffer and show them that college is a real possibility. Properly equipped students can and do succeed. It seems a simple thing to lend a child a pen or to give him or her a notebook. It seems easier to me to occasionally cut a kid a break and give him a pen rather than badger him about his responsibilities. If he doesn't have the pen, he can't learn. If we give it to him, he can. It seems so simple. They need pens and pencils to do their work. With these simple, basic supplies the children will be able to take notes, do their homework, draw, create... The sky is the limit. Without them their future as a student is bleak. I can't tell you how many times I hear "Miss M, Can I borrow a pen or pencil?". Thank you for helping me solve this problem. It takes so little to help these young men and women achieve the greatness to which they aspire. Help me keep them in basic school supplies! The students will be so grateful.
