My students need 5 Math resources, including a Calendar Math Activity Program an All-About-Math Photo library and a set of Instant Math learning centers.
Keep Math in Mind! After all, everyday we use math to purchase food, sort out clothes for the day, and to keep track of time. As a kindergarten teacher, my job is to help lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning and loving math. However, in a low income community with few math manipulatives, laying a gap-free foundation becomes tricky at best!
My students love math, but trying to teach some of the concrete lessons without materials is difficult, and teaching the abstract without examples is almost impossible.
This year I had the task of teaching about 3D objects like pyramids, cylinders, and spheres with few, if any, hands-on examples. Trying to discuss how a cone can slide and roll without one to look at was very trying for many of my students. Concepts like fractions and symmetry are hard enough for five year olds who get many examples depicting these principals, but when materials limit your class to only learning by experimenting with paper and scissor, the task becomes very taxing. My students have tried their best, but a little help from you and I know my students will be experiencing success!
We only need some hands-on resources for my students to become math maniacs! With your help, I can have enough 3D shapes for all of my students to hold and observe as we do our shape study. I can get Instant Learning Centers that will help my students practice their latest math concept with step by step picture instructions! With a photo library I can show my students many examples of symmetry, fractions, and many other math concepts! And with the Calendar program I can organize our morning math lessons and devote more time to student interaction and less time to changing our calendars and patterns!
Can you imagine a world where people cannot tell time? How could business survive? Can you imagine a world where people cannot tell the difference between shapes? How could people understand road signs?
These are simple skills whose foundations are laid in Kindergarten. Please do not let my students' math foundations be filled with holes because they lacked hands-on materials in school! Keep math in mind and help my class become math maniacs!
