A 'Novel' Experience

My students need 15 copies each of "Holes", "Crash", and "Maniac Magee", as well as one copy of 44 other books related to Social Studies and social/emotional growth.

Grades 6-8

I work at a special education school, servicing emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. The 175 students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds; over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch and over 90% receive public assistance. The school’s ethnicity is as follows: 60% Hispanic, 30% African American, 8% Caucasian, and 2% Asian. These factors come together and place our children at a huge disadvantage, but we are committed to providing these students with a rigorous academic and therapeutic program.

I am beginning a Humanities-based program for our middle school. The majority of these children do not read for pleasure, and many are not reading on grade level. In the hopes of getting them to think about college at an earlier age, the program will be designed to teach them that they can not only learn to read, but enjoy it and be good at it. A large portion of the books that I have requested are history based. A few (four) chapter novels have also been requested. Three of the chapter novels deal with social/emotional growth, which I am hoping will hook the kids, as most of them have moderate to severe emotional issues.

The majority of the resources that I need are books. Our school district is a 'special act' school district, and we are very low on funds. Should I be granted this project, it will give me enough books to have in the classroom for the kids to be able to have a choice in what they want to read. It will benefit them by providing a large range of topics and a large range of ability level. Most of the books in our school library have been donated to us, and a good 90% are at a reading/interest level that are beyond the capabilities of my students.

Your project will make a huge impact on the lives of my students. You will be assisting me in implementing a curriculum that is usually only seen in the wealthier school districts. So many of our students don't come from homes where anyone reads for pleasure, and the very notion that someone CAN read for pleasure is foreign to them. Many of our kids are able, intellectually, to go to college, yet many of them don't/can't go because they either can't read, or can't read productively. I am trying to change this, and will your help, I will.
