Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The results are in -- students who increased their reading volume this year improved their achievement performance and developed their literacy and language! I teach a 4th grade class in a Title 1 neighborhood school with 65% English Language Learners (predominantly Spanish-speaking). We have a school-wide focus on math, reading, technology, and motivating ALL students to one day attend and finish college.

Our school promotes LOTS of reading! We know and believe that the more time students have with books, the more they will learn about the world. Many of my 4th graders have really stepped up to the challenge of meeting their daily reading goal in school and at home. They have acknowledged that having a book in hand at all times and actively engaging in them required a lifestyle change. My students are doing all they can to effectively use their resources to further enrich their literacy and their lives. When asked about their challenges in reading at home, my struggling readers said they found it extremely difficult to stay focused, and they frequently lacked the support to improve their decoding and fluency. These readers have recently discovered the power of audio books in helping increase their motivation for reading and also improve their listening skills. Unfortunately, we do not have the tools to allow them to listen to audio books at home.

With MP3 players, my struggling readers will be able to listen to audio books in school and at home, increasing their feeling of success during independent reading. The MP3 players will allow us to download several stories and, in turn, help sustain my students' reading focus at home. In using the MP3 players, they'll have the reading assistance they've been longing for at home.

Your help and support will ensure that my students continue their reading at home. You will make it possible for my students to gain more reading confidence, increase their reading volume, fluency, and, additionally, their comprehension! My struggling readers believe that there's great hope for their improvement and, ultimately, their success. They desire to do their best in reading--if only they had additional resources. Your contribution will surely convey to them that there are many caring people out there who share in their hope for success! Thank you, in advance, for considering us.
