I teach special needs children that are learning to be the best they can be. I teach kindergarten through second grade moderate varying exceptionalities students. I work at a Title 1 school and not only do my students live with a disability or disabilities, but some are from low income homes and are not exposed to many activities in the community and subsequently do not learn social behaviors as easily as others. Their disabilities and limited exposure in social settings effects their ability to acquire adaptive skills that allow them to succeed in daily life.

All of my students receive special services and therapies. Part of my responsibility and desire is to teach an age appropriate social curriculum. I have bought several social curriculum's but have not had success with these like I have had with my own "Boardmaker" teacher created social stories. I have had great luck in teaching adaptive behaviors, such as "using your words" and "how to be a good friend" through social stories that I have created using a special needs computer program called "Boardmaker". The students love these social stories books because the pictures are familiar and they understand them even though they cannot read the words of the social stories.

I make teacher created social stories with the Boardmaker program on my computer. I print the stories on cardstock so the books are durable and use color ink to make the stories more appealing to my students. After creating and printing the social stories, I laminate them and include them in our class library. I also use Velcro at times to make some of the stories interactive. Students can Velcro their picture in a book when necessary. The students love to read them. Often times I insert their photographs so that they can relate to the skill being taught. For example, for our social story book on "How to Line Up and Walk in Line" I used a photograph of my class lined up the way they should be every time. They get excited about seeing themselves in the book and as a result are motivated to line up correctly (face front, hands by your side, etc.).

The social curriculum that I create and teach is such an important part of my students' day because my teacher created social stories books are used throughout the day as reminders of positive and appropriate behaviors. If you fund my class for this project, I will be able to continue creating individualized social stories books for my students so that they may acquire the adaptive skills they need to be successful in the general education setting and daily life. Thank you for considering my class.
