I teach third-grade at a school that serves a majority of students who are economically disadvantaged in the Southeastern US. Daily I endeavor (see photo) to give them learning experiences that expand their knowledge of the world beyond the walls of our classroom.

The homes and neighborhoods of many of my students are characterized by unemployment, gang activity, and poverty. To these 8- and 9-year-olds, this blight and hopelessness defines America. Through pen pal relationships, extensive reading, following current events, and multi-media research I endeavor to provide learning opportunities that teach them about the diversity and beauty of the country in which they live, from sea to shining sea.

This simple USA map rug would provide a practical, consistent, hands- and feet-on visual marker of the places we study each day. It would facilitate geography skills and allow students to physically "go" to the Rockies or "float" in the ocean or "travel" from one state to another.

Your gift will provide a central, classroom gathering spot and learning center that encourages students to ask questions, find locations, and dream dreams of future exploration.
