Reading with family inspires readers for a lifetime! I am a teacher for 3rd graders in a highly transient school. I have 28 students and several English Language Learners. Our public school serves students of lower income families and students come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds including Asian, Hispanic, Russian, and German.

Challenging students to read at home is a huge obstacle when there is not enough high quality literature available to take home. Students are continually asking to take books home to read with their family but we are always short of resources. As a result, students are not able to improve reading skills and fall further behind. Due to the low economic status of many students, this is a rising problem. Reading every night is a proven strategy to improving reading comprehension.

I will use the backpacks purchased to fill with high quality children's literature that meet my students' interests. The backpacks will provide storage for the books so they stay in good shape for longer enjoyment. In addition, the backpacks will have activities to be completed with families. The ultimate goal is to get the whole family involved in reading the books and completing the activities so everyone involved develops a deeper love of reading. The storage racks will allow me to properly store the items and allow students easy access to choose their materials.

By supporting my literacy backpack program, you will be bringing the love of reading to more than 25 families throughout the entire school year. This is a program that will last years to come reaching many more families each year.
