Our Kids: Our hardworking military families need your help! My classroom is a diverse second grade classroom in San Diego, California and yes many of them have that beautiful toothless smile when they are happy. These wonderful seven and eight year olds are all from military families. Many kids have a parent currently overseas (mostly in Iraq). As you can imagine, their lives are pretty stressful. Many are worried about a deployed mom or dad. Our school is primarily low income and has limited financial resources.

The Situation: Our classroom / school has limited funds and very little technology. We do not have a computer lab and students have limited access to computers. We recently had one Apple Laptop funded through Donorschoose.Org and you can imagine its’ popularity! This laptop is a beautiful Powerbook from Mac. It is wireless and we currently use it for the Web and Internet lessons. Unfortunately, the computer does not have Microsoft Office on it. Students can not use it to word process their writing or for graphing and math work on Excel.

The Solution: I would like to add Microsoft Office to this computer. This will allow the students to word process their writing in Word and I also have graphing and math lessons on Excel they will use. As you know these programs are probably the most used in the world today and students gaining an early understanding of how they work will have an edge. You can help close the technology gap between the ”haves and the have-nots”.

You can make such a difference to our military kids and families. Your donation will bring lots of those toothless smiles to our classroom. When I talk to our families their number one priority is that their kids are happy and successful in school while they are gone. Your donation of this computer will make a great difference in their lives.
