My plant and animal life cycle unit needs 49 nonfiction books.

"Yay! We're parents!" my seven-year-old students happily exclaimed the morning they came into the classroom and realized that many of our silkworm eggs had hatched. To help track and study the stages within the life cycle, we are raising butterflies, moths, and radishes. My students are so excited to observe and record the changes taking place that I don't think they realize how much writing they've been doing lately! And the conversations...I've been delighted at the questions they've asked, the connections they've made, and the social interactions they've experienced. Older students, parents, and mainstreamed special education students have all been eager to share in our "living lessons."

My students are now ready to take on their own research projects. They will choose a plant or an animal, find out about its life cycle and the changes that take place within the cycle, and write a report from the information they find. They are also required to visually show the class what they have learned by creating a 3-dimensional diorama which will show the plant/animal's habitat and what it looks like at each phase. To do this, my students will need nonfiction resources and my classroom library is sorely lacking the books we need. While I have many titles about butterflies and frogs, I don't have any books about other topics. It is time for my students to connect what they've seen in our plants and insects to other forms of life, but I don't currently have the books which will help them do so.

The books I am requesting are all about the life cycle and I have tried to choose a wide variety of topics that I think will be of interest to my second graders. They are easy-to-read texts which will give them access to the content, and they have fantastic illustrations which will surely help my students when they are creating their art projects.

This life cycles unit is one that is taught in all of the second grade classes at my school. Should we be fortunate enough to receive these books, we will certainly be sharing them with the other classes. The books will also be used in years to come as this life science unit is one that our entire district encourages every year. Your generous donation will have a tremendous impact on many students who are eager to learn about plants and animals and who are able to read and access the information independently now.
