Pass the Mic - Using Hip-Hop to Transform Lives

My students need a Battle DJ System to produce and perform positive, uplifting hip-hop music that they will perform for elementary and middle school students as well as public concerts.

Hip-Hop can save lives. It can transform our students and turn them into positive contributors to their communities. Next year I will be teaching a new class called Pass The Mic. It will be taught to high school students and the goal is to have them write, produce, and perform positive, uplifting hip-hop music. We will take our show on the road and perform regularly. The hope is that students will write constructively about social issues and inspire those exposed to their music. Too many kids go through school feeling that there are no relevant electives of which they can be a part. This class fills a huge need for students who love music, but are not interested in chorus or band. We will be integrating character skills and goal-setting within the program, hoping to keep kids in school who might otherwise drop out. I hope you will consider funding this project. It might be the start of something big.

We have no money. My principal agreed for me to give this class a shot, but could not commit any money to it since the budget is so tight. My students are creating hip-hop music on their own, but they lack the resources to do it properly. They do not have access to all of the equipment and knowledge they need to make a difference with their talents. I want to give them that opportunity.

I am in need of DJ equipment and recording equipment. We need a PA system, turntables, mixer, mics, etc. My students will use this equipment every day all year long. They will use this equipment to perfect their craft and prepare for public shows. We are trying to transform the lives of the students who will make the music as well as those who are exposed to it. We believe hip-hop can be a powerful force for good, but schools must teach students how to make that happen. These turntables would be a huge piece of the puzzle for us. We hope this program will become a fixture at our school. We also hope it will start a movement for hip-hop education that will spread to other schools.

Your donation will put this equipment directly in the hands of students who are eager to make a difference through musical expression. I firmly believe that this program will change lives, bring students from a variety of backgrounds together and serve as a model for other schools to follow. You will make it possible for my students revolutionize the way we think about music education in America.
