My students need a reading center, books, and seating to provide differentiation for learners that are struggling, as well as those that need enrichment.

My Students

Anytime you can relate a story to the content matter that is being taught, students tend to remember the content better. We already sing, dance and draw; however, there are many math books available that will make learning the topics more relevant and my students will enjoy the inclusion of reading in their math class!

I teach a 6th grade math class, in a rural setting, where more than half of the students are from low income families.

I teach a variety of learners: advanced, regular, special ed, and ELL. The majority of my students are struggling learners, and I am constantly searching for new and unique ways to make learning fun for them!

My Project

My students love to sit in groups to do activities. If I could provide a reading area and books in which they could read math stories together, it would enhance the lessons that we are studying in mathematics. I believe some students would be able to even start making up their own stories to help them remember math topics!

Math is not always the most fun subject, especially for struggling learners; however, implementing reading can provide relevant content to make math "more real".

I strive to make the class fun and meaningful while providing my kids with the content needed to succeed. Anytime I can provide an activity, such as a math story, where the student can relate to the story to the concept, they (the students) begin to enjoy the topic!
