"I am an English teacher in a high-poverty school located in rural North Carolina. My students are in the twelfth grade and are completing the North Carolina Senior Graduation Project in order to graduate from high school and become prepared for college. Our community is very small and we have over 53% of our students qualified for the free or reduced lunch program. According to the U.S. Census, "The per capita income for the families served by our school is nearly 50% less than the surrounding areas and significantly less than North Carolina's average. As a result of the low income levels in our schools, students rarely have access to a computer at home. I am seeking to have a mini-laptop with at least 1 GB of RAM so that students would be able to create Microsoft PhotoStories and use Microsoft Word to complete the Senior Graduation Project and the physical product/presentations required. Students would share this technology while the class is in the library researching. It is an invaluable resource which would be used both now and in the future. I would be personally responsible for the upkeep and condition of this device. What I would like to do is provide 1 Acer mini-laptop with 1 GB of RAM for my students so that they would be able to create Microsoft PhotoStories and use Microsoft Word to complete the Senior Graduation Project. Some of my students are having difficulty portraying the impact of their physical products because they do not have access to the technology. Most of my students do not have computers at home and many also do not have driver's licenses, cars, et cetera to travel in order to use a computer. By donating to this project, you will ensure that students are able to complete their Senior Graduation Projects and graduate. In addition, students will be able to impress upon the judges the importance of technology in the classroom as well as proudly display their physical products in a creative, unique way. Please help these students to stay motivated and encouraged to graduate during this time of economic crisis. Thank you for the consideration!
