I currently teach academic and advanced chemistry classes in a small, rural high school to students in grades 10, 11, and 12. 39% of students within my school district are eligible for free or reduced lunches.

Complex mathematical calculations and graphing are part of the academic and advanced chemistry curricula. Many students in my classes have calculators that perform only basic functions. Most students do not own calculators with graphing capabilities and scientific functions. In addition, some students do not own calculators at all.

The classroom set of graphing calculators would enable me to provide provide students the opportunity to learn the mathematical content of chemistry using graphing calculators. The classroom set of calculators would benefit my students in many ways. For example, students would be able to use the large display provided by graphing calculators to view equations in their entirety as they enter them as opposed to one quantity at a time with the basic calculators that most of them currently have. In addition, I would be able to lead students by example using a projector to show them how to enter data when teaching complex equations relating to reaction rate equations, pH equations, the Nernst equation, and many other topics.

You would make it possible for my chemistry students to use this technology to improve their learning of mathematical content in chemistry. The mathematical skills that they learn are essential in their preparation for college.
