"I like math games because you get to learn math, play with your friends and so it's fun." "I like when we get to use different objects in math because it helps me learn."
I was a first year teacher last year and taught second grade. This year I am looping with my students to third grade.
I heard comments like those above often from my students as a first year teacher. I got to see which materials helped my students learn better and enjoy math more. I also learned what math topics they struggled with and therefore needed hands-on objects for.
Students often struggle with telling time. The Judy clocks make the hour hand pull along with the minute hand allowing students to understand the concept of time better.
Students must count edges, faces, and vertices of 3D shapes which is almost impossible for them to do without the shapes in front of them.
Unifix cubes are used for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. My students actually loved learning "their times" when we were fortunate to borrow unifix cubes from another teacher.
Foam dice are used for almost every math game and math games were my students' favorite learning strategy.
You will make it possible for students to learn a variety of math topics so much better and easier than they ever would without these materials. They will use these materials almost every day and many students will use them for years to come. You can help students love math!
