I teach resource Developmental Reading to a wonderful group of high school students with special needs in a high-poverty urban area. These students have a variety of exceptional needs including learning disabilities, emotional or behavioral disorders, mental disabilities, and other health impairments, such as attention-deficit disorder.

The majority of students in my developmental reading classes are reading below grade level, some who still struggle with decoding words at the elementary school level. There is not enough money in the yearly budget to afford software programs or technology, such as computers or iPods, to help bring the use of audio books or podcasts into the classroom.

Because so many students have difficulty with phonics and fluency, they are left disinterested in and frustrated with the reading process. As someone who loves to read this is very discouraging. I would like to be able to foster a love of reading in all my students as well as boost self-esteem. One way to do that is to give students access to the reading material that their peers are reading. The iPod Nano could be used to download audio books as well as to play lessons and books recorded on the hand-held recorder I am including in this proposal.

Your donation will assure that all of my students are able to read age-appropriate books on a daily basis without the fear of embarrassment because of reading deficits. You will also be providing the latest technology to students who may not have any other access to iPod technology. I also feel that this proposal will help students who plan on going to college, as having knowledge of iPod technology could prove to be a valuable study tool and accommodation in the post-secondary years. The use of the iPod for reading will also help improve reading skills, which are essential not only in college, but in daily life.
