Learning With Attitude!

My school needs 16 copies each of 5 different books to learn about our "Attitudes of the Month".

Attitude is everything, isn't it? At my school, we certainly think so. We are a K-8 International Baccalaureate (IB) school, and as part of our studies, we learn about twelve different attitudes that will lead all children to become internationally minded adults who can be successful in the global community. I am a reading specialist and IB coordinator, so I have the good fortune to work with students at all age and ability levels. Our students are culturally, economically, and academically diverse.

All of our students learn about the attitudes of integrity, independence, appreciation, creativity, curiosity, respect, empathy, confidence, tolerance, enthusiasm, commitment, and cooperation. One way we learn about the attitudes together is by the Book of the Month. The Book of the Month is a story that every teacher shares with his or her students so that they can discuss whatever attitude we are currently focusing on. This allows our kids to have a fun and meaningful experience with literature, as well as a quality discussion about good character and how it is exhibited. Unfortunately, buying each classroom a book every month is an expensive task. We simply do not have money in our budget to purchase these books!

That's where you come in. I am requesting multiple copies of five different books: Why Explore? by Susan Lendroth, Planting the Trees of Kenya by Claire A Nivola, First Day in Grapes by L. King Perez, Henry's Freedom Box by Levine, and Across the Alley by Richard Michelson. These books will enable us to celebrate and learn about five different attitudes of the month. Each teacher will be given a copy of each book to read and discuss with his/her students, allowing the entire school to have a common frame of reference when discussing the International Baccalaureate attitudes. If you preview these titles, you will see that these books were chosen not only to promote the IB attitudes, but to provide our students with continued exposure to multiple cultural perspectives. We want all of our students to develop an appreciation for the many, varied members of our global community!

Next year will be our third year of providing Books of the Month for our students, but we cannot do it without your help! Your generosity will enable us to create the international leaders of tomorrow!
