Harmonicas in the Classroom

My students need 60 harmonicas and 10 copies of a harmonica book to share. Since the harmonica is a wind instrument it is not shared with other students. My students need their own harmonica to learn to play a musical instrument connected with a study of American Music.

I teach music K - 8. Many of my students are high-need and school music is their opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. I have a large variety of classroom percussion that we use to accompany singing. I also have Orff instruments that we use to learn to play melodies. However, my students must work in partners or teams of three when playing the Orff instruments. Therefore they don't get much practice in playing songs.

Although they love to sing, all of my students are keenly interested in performing music on instruments. They love to make sounds and they especially love to play songs. Whenever they can play a song, they call me excitedly to show off their new skill. My younger (grades 3 - 5) high-need students need a small, portable instrument that can inspire them anywhere. Although some can purchase a harmonica, most cannot.

The harmonica is an ideal instrument for my students because learning the necessary breath control will help them control their breathing throughout the day. Learning to play tunes will motivate them and connect them with American music of the Civil War period and onwards. Playing the harmonica will connect my students with the blues. Every child who has a harmonica will benefit by learning to play songs on it. Although the harmonicas will live at school, they will go home with the students for sleep-overs occasionally so students can perform for their families. At the end of the project, students who can play at least three songs proficiently will own their harmonicas. Learning to play songs on an instrument requires reading musical notation which strengthens reading and comprehension skills.
