Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In our fifth grade classroom, there are thirty-five students, and almost everyone is an English Language Learner- most are children of recent immigrants, others are newcomers. These students are from Burma, Burundi, Columbia, Mexico, India, Turkey, and Yemen. Some students arrived at our school this September after living in refugee camps, and spoke no English at all! 100% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Eight students have IEP's for moderate to mild learning disabilities. Differentiation and modeling are the key to teaching these students, and technology has proven to be a common interest for all of them. The large number of students and range of their prior education makes managing groups and projects a challenge!

My students LOVE to get on the Internet- my non-English students will use free time to pull up pictures of their native countries to show their classmates. They've learned how to use Google language tools and often read news and blogs written in their native languages. Lately I've been bringing in my own laptop and netbook (the model I've requested) for them to use to put together presentations on different countries. We've also started a recycling program, but had only the two classroom computers to use, and students would be disappointed when they wanted to use the computer but couldn't get a turn. Also, two students with disabilities have fantastic ideas, but horrendous spelling and penmanship, and might be able to write more efficiently on the computer, but it's often busy.

I need more computers! The netbook seems like a perfect solution. It's the start to a bigger plan to get students familiar with a host of skills, including blogging, creating videos and presentations, designing websites, learning to type and use Open Office applications, and more. Ideally, I'd like to get one netbook per group, but this first one would allow students access to the Internet and great practice in computer skills.

My students are deserving- they are curious, hard working, and have taught me so much!! These kids have a lot of potential, but are starting out from behind. I liken their situation to having to catch up to a moving train. They'll have to work twice as hard and faster than their peers just to catch up to where they should be. They need to master English, get to grade level, and compensate for months, sometimes years, of lost schooling while at refugee camps. The students are from low-income families and few have computers at home. With so many in our classroom, it can be difficult to keep everybody engaged. Students really seem to connect with technology, and are developing useful skills while working on classroom projects. They do amazing things when given the right tools. Can you get us started?
