Children love sharing their ideas and strategies! One of the ways we do this in our elementary classroom is through the use of an overhead projector. Our school is one of high poverty that does not have access to updated technology such as Smart Boards; however, my second and third grade students stay focused, on task, and learning when we share ideas, strategies, and information on the overhead.

As school budgets face cuts each year, it becomes increasingly challenging to replace broken equipment. The last working overhead projector my class acquired came from a swap shop at the University of Wisconsin; however it has since stopped working. We use this low tech machine daily in many ways including; math warmups, math lessons, choral poetry reading, to share examples of writing ideas, to revise and edit students writing, and for social studies. The students love to show their work and ideas on the overhead, it keeps them engaged and learning.

A new overhead projector would make it easier for my students to continue to grow as learners. The students ask me daily if our projector is fixed or if we can get a new one. I would love to buy a new one for my class; however, I have already spent a great deal of my own money for books, snacks, field trip scholarships, and many more items necessary to my students.
