Reading Rocks - Special Ed Library, Part 2

My students need 4 copies each of 15 non-fiction history story books, including "If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620" and "If You Lived When There Was Slavery in America".

I teach special education in a self-contained classroom In a public school in rural Maine. This is the first year for the self-contained room. The students are in 9th through 12th grade and all have cognitive impairment to one degree or another. They are great kids who have struggled for years in school.

Our library is very small. Many of our textbooks are designed for students with more advanced reading skills than my students possess. The students learn best when the material is presented in a way that builds on their current knowledge, but traditional textbooks assume knowledge that students with special needs often do not have. As a result of insufficient textbooks and reading materials, my students have large gaps in their knowledge of history and most find history boring.

We need reading materials that are developmentally appropriate for my special needs students and that will bring history to life for them. The "If You Lived When" series teaches students about major historical events while comparing life in the past eras with today. Students will understand that children in colonial times did not travel in cars or shop at malls, for example, while learning about the early settlers. My students will be learning history while developing their English, reading, and language arts skills. More importantly, we will foster a love for reading by bringing books to life for the students.

This project will make it possible to take "boring" out of U.S. History for my students and to make it meaningful to them. Further, this project will give the students a nice variety of developmentally appropriate, and factual, reading material. This basic understanding of history is especially important for my students who plan to continue with their education after high school. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated!
