Have you noticed the steady decline in the number of children reading these days? What happened to the days when curling up with a good book was a form of entertainment? I am an 8th grade Language Arts teacher in a high-need community, and I would truly love to see this again.

Unfortunately, many of the classics do not appeal to the students I teach; many of them come from poverty stricken homes and gang affiliated families. Reading just isn't as exciting as life outside of school to most of them. I have my own personal collection of novels in the classroom, so I am always introducing new books and authors to my students. Many come back again and again, asking to be led to the next exciting novel. I want to foster this excitement and make it grow; I want to see my entire class loving a novel and wanting to take it home to finish.

Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment is part of the solution. True, it is only a small piece of the puzzle, but the novel features young adults dealing with real-life situations. The novel is fast-paced and is almost addictive. If I can just give my students a small dose of exciting literature, I believe they will be begging for seconds...THIRDS...and more.

With your help, we can chip away at a few of the barriers that many of these students see as holding them back. Many see themselves as "horrible readers" or "slow", but by allowing them to enjoy themselves as they read may empower them. Can you imagine a student who is fast approaching a fork in his/her life: stay in high school or dropout to do something I'm better at. Why not help them to be "better" at reading? Why not make school more "fun"? I'm trying my best to do this, but I most certainly need your help.
