I am a speech language therapist who specializes in teaching language skills that students need in order to be more successful readers. My special needs students have cognitive impairments that make it difficult for them to progress academically but this does not stop them from helping others in their community. They attend special classes, grades 9 to 12, in a regular high school where they work on projects such as "Catch Em In The Cradle" that involves stuffing baggies with reading materials and reading lists for newborns. This material is distributed by our area Reading Council to new mothers to encourage them to start reading to their children as soon as possible. Our students have made over 35,000 packets available for this cause.

It is equally important to our students that they also learn to read. In order to do this, they frequently need to be exposed to non traditional approaches to teaching reading. One of the most successful approaches I have found is to expose them to the multi-modality approach of using technology which stimulates all modalities including visual, auditory, and tactile modes of learning. Our students also do very well in groups where they can stimulate each other by sharing answers. With this approach, we are finding that our students "Can Learn to Read, Too!!"

With the use of an LCD multi-media projector, we can do group instruction and only have to purchase one piece of software to support the entire class. This offers us the ability to purchase a wider variety of software to expose our students to as many different approaches as possible, hoping to find the one that works the best for each student. It also offers the multi-modality stimulation they so desperately need.

Your donation will make it possible for our students to accomplish something most of us take for granted, the ability to read. You will be assisting them to be able to be more functional participants in the world around them while also increasing their self confidence and improving their self image. Please remember that they also give to their community in so many special ways!!
